Kubu Ampo is derived from two words: Kubu and Ampo. Kubu is Balinese word for hut. In Balinese mind, Kubu is a very simple structure owned by a very poor family. It is a Balinese polite way to respect others. In fact, usually a 'kubu' is placed in the middle of rice-field for farmers to take rest. 'Ampo' is Balinese word for white clay - unfertile soil. On the wet season such soil is muddy like glue; while on the dry-season it is as hard as stone. The famers named this area Tanah Ampo to indicate the area is not fertile for rice-field. So, literally Kubu Ampo is 'hut at clay'. The soil where the home stands is definitely not fertile and therefore is very difficult to grow plantations. However with a serious hard-work, the land has been changed to become verdant and fresh. Although this home is definitely not luxurious (it is made not luxurious) as what a villa can offer, but it is reliable to save your cost to get an enjoyable and memorable Bali holiday.
Standing on a local community houses, Kubu Ampo is a safe and secured accommodation. With its three bedrooms (all king sized beds) and swimming pool within large verdant garden, the home is recommended for a extended family holiday.
This nice Bali etnic and rustic home is ready to assist you to get a nice but affordable Bali holiday. Kubu Ampo has a sister home with modern style named Kubu Jepun, a cheap but reasonable Bali accommodation.
This Javanese style house was brought from Purwoasri Village, some steps to the Alas Purwo (Old Forrest) in Banyuwangi district, East Java. This old teak house was owned by Pak Atmo (Mr Atmo), a prosperous trader lived there in 1950's. Years after his period, for economic reason, his descendants can not maintain it again. Finally it was used to stay buffaloes and goats, although the quality of the timber used is still good and should be reasonable to be a nice home. With a hard-work, the house then moved to Bali. After arriving at the area, the carpenters re-erected it again as it was in Java, certainly with some Balinese touches.
When it was still in Purwoasri, this house was definitely not a Joglo, but a fushion between Central and East Java style. When it is now in Bali, it is enriched with Balinese touches.
Bali has a religious concept of Tri Hita Karana - three importants way to reach the happiness. Human being must keep a good relationship with their Creator - Source Of The Life, must keep good relationship with others, and must keep good relationship with the environment by taking care of it as well as possible. Human being (called as 'bhuwana alit') is just very small particle of the universe (called as 'bhuwana ageng'). People can produce furnitures, but definitely can not make wood or timber. People can produce metal, but definitily can not make iron-sand. This fact indicates that human being is totally dependent on the environt. If they can not maintain the environtment well as is, then they will certainly harvest badness in their future. This is the reason why we have to never throw just a small piece of wood as possible. Get it functioned as maximum as possible. We have to re-cycle anything to be new functionable things again.
Applying this concept at Kubu Ampo, consequently the house is styled as 'old-made'. Yes, it looks old because the timber used is definitely old. Jokingly the house is called 'Umah Lulu' means 'house made of rubbish' (Lulu is Balinese word for rubbish). Yes, Kubu Ampo is made of timber left by others, old furniture left by others, and some parts of the floor use old tiles from 1970-s also left by others. Those all 'second-hand' products are combined with modern touch such as water closet, dining facilities, or the pool.
Stand on large enough land (2.500 sqm), the house boasts its verdant garden with fruit plantations such as kind of bananas, mangoes, mangosteen, jack-fruits and guava. Part of the land is used to grow orchid (Anggrek Panda) and Buah Naga (a kind of tropical fruit needs dry & un-fertile soil). This is to show the visitors that life of human being is totally dependent on nature.
As the Javanese house commonly does, the central point of the house is the Soko Guru (four main columns) made of strong teak. This Soko is surrounded by four rooms: 3 bedrooms and one room for media-entertaining room, and a large veranda for sitting area and dining area. This veranda is totally opened to view the large garden and pool without any glass-window. This makes the house is strongly related with the nature, even with no partition. Guests may feel the air breezes and listen to the voice of birds or crickets or frogs at night. Again, this is to show that human being can not be away from environtment.
Usually life of Indonesian ethnic are 'centralized' in one spot: bedrooms, living and sitting area, cooking and dining area. It is also done here. The main house is for 3 king sized bedrooms with private bath-rooms, one room is for media-entertainment, and the edge of the open style veranda is for kitchen. All is packed in one structure. Two bedrooms have private semi-open style bathroom with showers, with tropical garden. When sitting at the closet, we can feel the air and look at the cute garden. When showering, even we can look at the sky.

All is at guests' own plan.
The kitchen is located on one corner of the main house. It is fully equipped with good cooking facilities. The dining table is made of thick wood with 8 chairs made of wood from shipwreck. BBQ facility is also available on request.

The central point of the large garden is the swimming pool. With size of 8 X 4 meters, the pool is comfortable for all visitors. The over-flow pool is unique as its 6 water-inlets are placed 60cm above the water surface like water fountains. This is to bring the memory of the visitors to the famous Tirta Empul Temple in Tampak Siring, where the Hindu people from all Bali come for "Panglukatan" holy bathing. The 6 falling water is symbol of Sadripu (the 6 main source of sins) must always be 'cleaned' by having holy bathing. When staying at this home, sound of falling water (from the fountains) can be listened in the morning, at noon and at the dusk, as the three moments to read the Hindu mantram Puja Tri Sandya prayers. Such Puja can help people to get purified from those sins. Again, the home is made to bring the memory of the visitors to nature and its Great Creator.
On the large garden, there are two smaller structures: Klumpu and Bale Kebo. In the past (about 80 years ago) the Klumpu was a Jineng - a big rice-barn. Then the grand-son of the first owner changed it to be a Klumpu - a smaller rice barn. It is a pity that finally it was thrown as fire-wood. Its original Balinese timber was saved, transported to this complex and re-erected here at this garden. It is now nice to be a post to relax. The Bale Kebo was a buffalo-stay in Java. It was re-erected here with some new touch. Now it is a large Bale Benong located next to the pool. For extended number of visitors, this structure can be converted into 'open' room with mattresses on floor.
